How it Works - Your Participation

Auction Items

Your charter company donates a $300 certificate or 2 tickets to qualified nonprofits to use as auction/raffle items or as a discount when directly booking an appreciation event for staff, volunteers, donors, or clients.

In addition to coordinating the initial inquiry process, Sailing for a cause can handle the entire certificate distribution process and will send you a monthly distribution report.

Certificate holders redeem the vouchers directly with you when making their booking

Private Charters

When a nonprofit funder books a charter, you make a donation equal to 20% of the cost of the charter to the nonprofit supported by that funder. Typically funders will then use the charter as a fundraising or appreciation event for the nonprofit, or they will donate the charter experience as an auction or raffle item. Funders may also choose to book with your charter company, rather than another charter company, simply because of your generous donation offer.

Funders are encouraged, but not required, to match your generous 20% donation with their own 20% donation.

Ticketed Charters

Nonprofits and Funders may request to host a special ticketed charter event during one of our existing ticketed charter sails. Your charter company will donate 20% of all ticket sales from this charter to the nonprofit. The Nonprofit will then promote the purchase of tickets for the “Sail & Support” event among its friends, supporters, and donors.

You may still sell tickets to other members of the public on this ticketed charter.

Nonprofits who receive donations from your charter company agree to publicize these events as well as acknowledge your charter company as a donor on all of their related outreach materials.

How it works - Our Services

Marketing Campaigns

We conduct: email outreach to nonprofits, foundations and yacht clubs; Social media posts; Targeted ads (i.e. Marin IJ, Latitude 38, Yacht Club newsletters etc.); and Postcard mailings.

Charter Partner Onboarding

We screen for US Coast Guard compliance and make sure that each Charter Partner is meeting the network’s minimum giving requirements.

Nonprofit Certification

We screen for nonprofit tax exempt legal status. Each Charter Partner always reserves the right to confirm or deny a donation request.

Website & Social Media Marketing

Each partner listing includes a featured photo, contact information, links to your website and social media, and an automated donation inquiry form that lets you know when a nonprofit is interested in receiving a donation.

Communications & PR

We follow up on all inquiries to answer questions about the Sailing for a Cause process and to encourage clients to contact you directly about charter related questions and bookings.

Operations & Finances

We compile and publish regular impact reports and will work with you and your accounting system to develop an efficient reporting process for all donation requests and Sailing for a Cause fees.

All first year start up and launch operations are being generously covered by Captain Kirk’s SF Sailing and Shelley Hamilton. After the first pilot year, we will work together with our Charter Partners to develop a sustainable, ongoing fee structure. It is anticipated that ongoing expenses will be covered collectively by Charter Partners through a flat membership fee, referral fees, or a combination of both. Our goal is to create a successful venture that makes a significant positive impact to important causes while also increasing Charter Partner income well beyond any ongoing membership or referral fees. We hope you’ll join us on this adventure!
